‘Why is there a cockpit from a B29 bomber sitting right in the middle of the gallery?’ you may well ask. Well that would be Matthew Day Jackson’s fault. The All American superstar artist has landed in London for his first show at Hauser & Wirth’s enormous new premises, 22,000 sq. ft. no less, in Savile Row. Dangling a space like this in front of a guy like Matthew Day Jackson is like taunting a bull with a bright red rag. Jackson is one of the most engaging and ambitious artists of his generation whose work references everything from impressionist painting to the surface of the moon, rap music, nuclear testing, paranormal activity and his preoccupation with death, his own mostly, as hinted at in a series of photographs entitled ‘Me, Dead at 37'. Tom Pilgrim, who’s in charge of exhibitions at Hauser & Wirth, takes us behind the scenes to explain exactly what this jaw-dropping work’s all about and to recount the joys of installing such ambitious sculpture. Absolutely unmissable.
