William ‘Bill’ Turnbull is arguably one of the greatest British painters and sculptors of the twentieth century, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Picasso and Giacometti. How can it be then that as we speak you’re scratching your noggin trying to place him? Well, sometimes history works in mysterious ways, immortalising certain individuals and leaving others to fall slightly by the wayside. As an artist Bill broke many boundaries in pioneering his own unique brand of Modernism. His abstract paintings which to an uninformed eye may appear to contain Rothko-like swathes of colour intersected by a long squiggly line running through the centre. To those in the know, the ideas behind these paintings came to Bill during his time as a pilot flying high above landscapes and rivers from what was in the 1960s a unique aerial perspective. Alex Turnbull, the artist’s son and an acclaimed film director in his own right, has created a remarkable and personal documentary which puts his father firmly back on the map. This time for good.

And as a very special treat just for Love Art Londoners, Alex will be joining us afterwards for a private Q&A about the making of the film and his father’s work. Excellent.

This event is for Members Only (20 places)
