Alex Binnie

So, think tattoos. Any particulars spring to mind? A sailor with an anchor on his forearm? A hairy biker brandishing ‘I Love My Mum’? Perhaps the name of a newborn sprog a la Posh and Becks? These are indeed all tattoos but would you classify them alongside Michelangelo’s David as great works of art? Maybe not, but that’s because you haven’t met Alex Binnie.

In tattoo circles Alex Binnie is something of a legend. A wild child punk in the 1970s he opted for the ‘alternative practice’ course at art school. Of course he did. He got his first tattoo as a teenager which triggered a life long love affair with body art. Since setting up Into You Tattoo in 1993 he and his band of brothers (and sisters) have become the most celebrated artists in their field, specialising in large-scale tribal designs. Until you see their work, you’ve never seen a proper tattoo. And Alex has some impressive arty credentials to boot. He’s inked the Chapman Brothers, Gary Hume once begged him to teach him the art and Grayson Perry is an old mucker. Alex is taking us behind the scenes at Into You Tattoo and talking to us about this ancient, sometimes misunderstood art form. And the chances are you'll end up wanting one. Utterly unmissable.

This event is for Members Only (25 places)
