Mat Collishaw, of YBA fame, is quite simply, awesome. His work envelops us in a twilight world poised between the alluring and the revolting, the familiar and the shocking, the poetic and the morbid. Pornography, the crucifixion, gleaming fairies, syphilitic child prostitutes, bestiality, bondage, addiction, religion, exaltation and despair, even the final hours of a death-row inmate. There is seemingly no taboo left unbroken, no dark corner Mat's unwilling to take us to – and yet, his work is utterly romantic, exquisitely beautiful, an expression of his wish to “create images that are awe-inspiring”. For his second solo exhibition at Blain Southern, THIS IS NOT AN EXIT, Mat returns to the medium of oil painting, and by 'eck can he paint! However, as is usual with his practice, nothing is literal; the primary source material - magnified images drawn from the pages of glossy magazines - is a simple metaphor, one part of a prism conceived to examine moral questions provoked by the excessive binge culture that culminated in the global financial crisis. Interesting stuff. Mat joins us, along with gallery director Adrian Sutton, for a very special night of discussion as we delve behind-the-scenes at Blain Southern’s knock out new HQ on Hanover Square, a spectacular experience in its own right. BRILLO PADS.
