Sometimes we all need a spot of TLC and works of art are no exception. Like babies, oil paintings are more resilient than you think but when they’re dropped they tend not to respond well. Paintings can get damaged for many reasons; some are hung above a fireplace for 200 years, some stored in a basement with a flood problem and some occasionally fall victim to a fruit loop making a political statement or a rogue toddler with a slingshot. Sometimes paintings aren’t really damaged at all, they just need a clean. If you’d been around since 1776, you’d probably need a bath too.
Simon Gillespie’s workshop is a cross between an artist’s studio and a mad scientist’s laboratory, bursting with vials of mysterious potions and obscure antique machinery. The work which Simon and his army of experts undertake is painstakingly delicate, requiring the patience of a saint and the hands of a surgeon. Love Art Londoners are invited to learn about the process as Simon rolls up his sleeves. Eye-popping stuff.
