Some people in the art world take themselves so seriously don’t they? Well, not Paul Housley. He once said in an interview that taking oneself too seriously “is on reflection quite a ridiculous thing to do really.” We love him already. Many of his works are self portraits which echo grand masters like Velasquez and Picasso. This characteristic irony is Paul’s perfectly weighted poke in the eye for the deadliest of sins, vanity.
Paul will be joining us for a chin wag about his new exhibition at the Poppy Sebire Gallery, an amazing haunt housed in a stunning converted Victorian church hall. And for those with a penchant for pub quizzes, the gallery’s neighbouring buildings have a few interesting stories to tell too. Depeche Mode and Yazoo both recorded their first albums in the disused church next door, The Tabard Inn from which Chaucer’s pilgrims set out for Canterbury once stood round the corner and Marshalsea Prison, where Dickens’ dad was banged up by the bailiffs, was also just up the road. Cowabunga.
