Meeting Shezad Dawood marks the first round of a spanking new collaboration between Love Art London and John Jones, the grand masters of the frame-making business. The John Jones team pride themselves on their close creative relationships with their artist clients (including the likes of Paula Rego, Damien Hirst, Chris Ofili and David Hockney, for whom they’ve made bespoke frames since the 1960s) so Love Art London's teamed up with them to bring a unique insight to some eye-popping studios through the eyes of the artists themselves.
And our first port of call? The ace Shezad Dawood. Born in London to a Pakistani mother, an Indian father with an Irish stepmother thrown in for good measure, Shezad’s like a poster boy for cultural diversity. And his use of film, photography, neon and much other ‘new media’ make him well twenty-first century. His thought-provoking work which explores notions of identity through playful collage of meanings and beliefs, chucks up a plethora of references to Bollywood films and music, Western cartoons like The Simpsons, food, The Qur'an, children's toys and dried tumbleweed. Shezad’s studio is packed full of pop-cultural paraphernalia, most impressively his personal collection of Bollywood records, spanning almost the length of the studio wall and finished off by two DJ decks, just in case he feels like throwing a few moves whilst working. Oh, not to mention his ping pong table which doubles as a work bench. And, yup, we’re definitely challenging him to a game. Outstanding.
