Is that a photograph of a man pooping on a beach? we hear you cry. Yup, and the dirty beggar’s name is Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. This rare photograph of our favourite vertically challenged Post-Impressionist is one of the earliest records of a celebrity misbehaving. Eat your heart out Paris Hilton. Chances are Toulouse-Lautrec wouldn’t have remembered this snap being taken given his penchant for a pint of absinthe before breakfast. Shortly after this photograph was taken he was banged up in a loony bin where he died of alcohol poisoning and syphilis. Ouch.
This work is just one of the many famous vintage photographs we’ll be discussing with gallery director Michael Diemar and photographer Jonathan Olley. Michael will be digging out some breath-taking gems by Louis-Jacques Daguerre, Gustave Le Gray and Brassai some of which have never been seen before. Plus as an extra special treat Jonathan will be showing us his impressive and perfectly preserved 8 x 10 incher. Which is his camera by the way. Splendid.
