Contemporary photographer Simon Roberts thinks digital is well over-rated. When it comes to taking pictures, Simon’s instrument of choice is a perfectly preserved vintage number, complete with cape. Using old school plates which only allow one shot at a time this is a technically complex beast to tame. And at £5 a plate, there ain't much room for error - Simon would need to re-mortgage his house if he screwed up too many times. Just as well he’s a technical genius then.
Simon was the official artist of last year’s General Election, a project which took him and his camper van the length and breadth of the land to capture the mood of the British people during a time of significant political change. Whilst Simon’s work has taken him all over the world, he has a deep fascination with his homeland and its people. We English is a truly remarkable group of photographs documenting the English landscape (as an undergraduate, Simon achieved a first class degree in Physical Geography which deeply informs his photography), and most importantly the people who occupy it. And we’re a funny old bunch, us Brits. Simon joins us for a special behind the scenes look at his new exhibition at Flowers Gallery and will be telling us exactly what make the English, well, so damn English. Fandabidozi.
